SEIZURES (FEBRILE SEIZURES-CONVULSIONS WITH FEVER)
Febrile convulsions are seizures triggered by a high fever. They're the most common type of convulsion and in general are harmless but, as a parent, are scary to watch.
FIRST AID:
- Lay your child gently on his side
- Don't restrain your child or stop the seizure movements. Once started, the seizure will run its course regardless of parent actions.
- Don't force anything into the child's mouth. He won't swallow his tongue.
- Following the seizure, write down what you witnessed and the approximate length of time the seizure lasted
- Notify your physician
HOME CARE:
- Reduce the fever by removing the child's clothing and applying cold washcloths to the face and neck. Sponge the rest of the body with cool water. When the seizure is over, give the usual dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen and encourage cool fluids.
