INSECT BITES
PREVENTION
- Give Benadryl according to label instructions .
- Wear long sleeves and pants
- Use insect repellent such as Sldntastic or Avon's Skin So Soft
- Attach an unused dryer sheet to the handle of your child's stroller
BEE, HORNET, WASP & YELLOW JACKET STINGS HOME CARE
- Remove any black dots left on the bite using sterilized tweezers or a needle (this is the stinger)
- Rub each sting with a cotton ball soaked in a meat tenderizer or baking soda solution or an ice cube
CALL THE DOCTOR DURING OFFICE HOURS IF:
- You can't remove the stinger
- Swelling continues after 24 hours
CALL THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF:
- Breathing or swallowing is difficult
- Hives are present
- There are 10 or more stings
MOSQUITOES AND OTHER INSECTS
Please note that some kids are more sensitive to mosquito bites. Their bites can swell and last 2 - 3 days. Hang in there and try the Home Care options below. HOME CARE
- Apply firm, sharp, direct pressure to the bite for 10 seconds
- Apply calamine lotion, Benadryl cream or a baking soda solution to bite area
- Give the child Benadryl liquid using the dosage chart on the package, if she is really uncomfortable
- Apply a nonprescription 1/2% hydrocortisone cream
CALL THE DOCTOR DURING OFFICE HOURS IF:
- Itching or pain interferes with sleep and is not relieved with Benadryl
* The bites become infected
